Good News Letter – Fall/Winter 2020

June 10, 2021 by Faye Harrisk

We are all looking forward to receiving some “good news” these days, especially from the “Good News Letter”! Hopefully you and your family are all safe and healthy during these trying times and looking ahead to better days.

We hope you were here to enjoy wonderful weather on the 4th of July weekend and share the excitement of the ANNUAL BOAT PARADE, either by being a participator or being a spectator. There were plenty of both, with a record number of boats this year about 107! Our lake definitely is experiencing a robust amount of people lately and everyone is looking to “get out of Dodge” as the expression goes. And this is certainly a wonderful place to be, or go to, and aren’t we all blessed to have a home here on Lake Gaston!

As a neighborhood, Holly Grove Estates, is excited to introduce our new neighbors.

  • Michael and Elizabeth Farnsworth are the new owners of 91 Winding Way and they are home based in Atlanta.
  • Sam and Ashley Crutchfield are the new owners of 137 Boyd Drive and they are home based in Raleigh.
  • Kevin Radez is the new owner of 238 Dogwood Way and he is home based in Apex, NC.
  • Leo and Silvana Murphy are the new owners of 332 Lakeview Drive and they are home based in Chesapeake, VA.
  • Carolyn Gregory-Adams is the new owner of 287 Lakeview Drive and she is from Warfield, VA.

If you are a RESIDENT OF MECKLENBURG COUNTY, VA you should know that “EARLY IN-PERSON VOTING” is being offered from Friday, Sept. 18th through Sat. Oct 31st at the Registrar’s Office in Boydton. Hours are 8:30-4:30 M-F and Saturdays 8 – 4. You can check your registration status by either calling the Registrar’s office at (434) 738-6191 X4313, or stopping by the office at 439 Madison St. Boydton, or checking on line at vote.elections.virginia.gov You can also see a sample two-sided ballot on line at mecklenburgelections.com

Don’t forget: ELECTION DAY is TUE. NOV 3rd. DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!

Our SEMI-ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING is SCHEDULED FOR OCT 3rd at 10 am. Because of the virus this meeting will again be held as a teleconference. At this meeting reports will be given by Holly Grove Board Member on the status of our community. You will receive an email with instructions of how to dial-in to the meeting 5 days prior to the meeting. This will be a “listen only” call the same as the last Annual General Membership Meeting. If you have any questions of general interest that you would like to have answered by the Board during this call, please email them to Faye Harris – fharrisk@verizon.net in advance of the meeting.

This year has been a CHALLENGE in so many ways. Unfortunately, Jennifer Allman, one of our new Board Members has decided to move and very fortunately was graciously replaced by Katherine Joyce of Holly Grove Lane. Thank you Katherine, for stepping up, and Jennifer may we wish you much happiness in your new home. Our loss is Morristown’s gain! We are excited to have so many NEW MEMBERS JOINING THE BOARD. We hope that YOU will say “YES” next year and become an active member of our community. We really need, and appreciate, your help.

I’m afraid we have some SAD NEWS to report: Ray and Mary Marshall had moved from the lake some time ago and in case you were not aware, Ray has now passed. Ray was our President and has served the Board well for many years, as did his wonderful wife, Mary. They were a very special and giving couple and will both be sorely missed. James and Margaret Allen, 287 Lakeview Dr have also passed this year.

911 ALERT: Don’t forget that calling “911” from your cell phone may NOT get you to the nearest response center, or maybe not even the right state! Use your land line if at all possible. If you must use a cell phone be sure to: BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR LOCATION (house # and street name, neighborhood name, county and state.) AND STAY ON THE PHONE if possible. Don’t forget to order the reflective number signs for your driveway, keep in mind, they can’t help you if they can’t find you! If you should have a water incident know that our neighborhood is at Mile Marker 17 near the mouth of Holly Grove Creek.

Speaking of COMMUNICATING, please be sure that the Board has all the correct contact information for you and that you keep it up to date.

We hope that you enjoy the beautiful season that will be coming soon with crisp air and lovely autumn colors, just perfect for taking walks. Here are a few REMINDERS:
If you’re taking your dog (and I’m sure he/she wants to go with you) please keep them safe and on a leash; why not pack a plastic bag to pick up litter that “somehow” gets left along the roads. Let’s all help to keep our beautiful lake area “beautiful”. Be cautious and listen for vehicles, for some reason they don’t seem to expect to have people walking on our roads, better to be safe than sorry!!! Speaking of vehicles, be reminded that our roads are owned by Mecklenburg County, they are not private roads and our Covenants prohibit the driving of go-carts or any unlicensed vehicle by an unlicensed driver. Please also obey our Speed Limit of 25 MPH as you drive through the neighborhood.
You should know that we usually have a 4 pm fire restriction. No fires before then. If you are burning be sure to watch the weather for wind and stay with your fire until it is out.

If you have something that you would like to include in the next “Good News Letter” please contact me: Peggy Donochod at pdonochod@gmail.com or 434-636-2494 or one of the Board members.

Stay safe and stay healthy
