“GOOD NEWS” from the Board:
May 2013
The new budget was approved at the General Membership Meeting on Sat. April 27th and there will be NO increase in dues for the next fiscal year! However there will be a large portion of our roads paved this year: Holly Grove Lane and Dogwood Drive and that’s a large expense in our budget, but well worth it! You can help to preserve our roads, and keep our costs down, by driving more slooooooowly, thanks
AND……Our newly elected Board will be:
Officers
Ray Marshall, President………1year remaining
Al Veeck, Treasurer…………….2 years remaining
Faye Harris, Secretary…………beginning a new 3 year term
Directors
Gary Shore…………beginning another 3 year term
Sally Cline………….beginning a 3 year term
Jane Barker………..2 yrs
Bill Biddle…………..2 yrs; Carol Haefner – 1 yr; Peggy Donochod -1yr .
You’ll note that each year three Board members rotate off, if you would like to serve our wonderful community, please contact Peggy Donochod (434) 636-2494.
It always feels “good” to welcome new neighbors to our community: Please welcome Dennis & Julia Jones from Chapel Hill, NC. They are the new owners of 67 Winding Way; Terry Long is now the owner of 228 Winding Way and he is from Remington, VA. We hope to see “y’all” around the neighborhood, in the lake, and at our socials (and if I somehow missed “welcoming” you, please let me know).
Speaking of “social news”……… here is a chance to enjoy your neighbors and make some $$! Now that I have your attention ….. we will be sponsoring a “Neighborhood Yard Sale” on Sat. May 18th from 8 – 1. You can put all your “stuff” in your driveway, garage, or gather with neighbors in the cul-de-sacs, whatever you prefer.
We ask two things: call or e-mail Carol Haefner 636-2583 grannynanny@bitbroadband.com and let her know if you’re interested ASAP so she can put out advertising, and please put a balloon, or sign, by your driveway to let folks know where to stop.
NEXT, mark your calendar for October 12th. Saturday morning we will have our semi-annual General Membership Meeting (time & place TBA) and it will be followed that afternoon at 1 pm with our “annual pig-pickin,’ covered dish, social” hosted in the Section A cul-de-sac. By popular demand, Ron and his wife Kathy, will once again be cooking up the best BBQ and hushpuppies around! Be sure to let Carol know that you’ll be coming and what dish you’ll be bringing and don’t forget your lawn chairs.
MORE GOOD NEWS; We are now working on a Holly Grove “website”. It is www.hollygrovelg.com. In the near future it will have all sorts of neighborhood info for you, including a map and our directory; General Membership minutes; Good News Letters; announcements, alerts and more! We are also working on the next directory. To make the most of these efforts we will need your e-mail address. Also, please check the last directory (2011) and see if your info is correct then contact Faye or Peggy with additional cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses (be sure to keep us “updated” of any changes in the future).
DO YOU KNOW?
- DYK ..This year is the “50th anniversary” of our lake and it’s being celebrated “big time” throughout the summer!! “Splash” is heading off this effort, be sure to check it out and support these fun events, you can contact the Lake Gaston Chamber of Commerce for the details.
- DYK..The “29th Annual Fourth of July boat parade” will be held on Sat. July 6th right here. Join in the fun and meet at the 17 mile marker at 10:30 am to start. Decorate your boat, and your friends & family, with red, white & blue (or just come as you are). It’s a wonderful patriotic event! That’s also the night for the fireworks at the Eaton Ferry Bridge. Any questions contact Peggy Donochod.
- DYK..There are websites for local important information that we all need to know: for local burn restrictions: www.dof.virginia.gov and for boating and PWC info www.dgif.virginia.gov
- DYK..that not everyone loves our pets as much as we do? As a neighborhood, we don’t have a leash law and we don’t like fences, and we want to be able to keep it that way! As a Board we are trying to address this problem that keeps coming back to us. When you walk your dog (or they walk you) please use a leash, or keep the dog close to you, on the roads to keep everyone safe, and be considerate and plan to pick up after them if they “fertilize” the neighbors yard. Remember the “Golden rule”: ”Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.
- DYK..that there is a phone number for America’s Waterway Watch to report any “suspicious activity”? Hopefully we never need it, BUT if needed contact the National Response Center’s Hotline at 877-24WATCH
- DYK..that we are looking into getting little signs to “remind” our folks of upcoming meetings? We would love to see everyone there, especially you!
- DYK..that our Association makes a donation annually to our wonderful Volunteer Fire Dept and First Responders? These loyal and hardworking folks are literally “lifesavers” for all of us, and in a bad situation they may be difference between your house and a pile of rubble. We are truly blessed to have this service and we hope you are generous with your donations too.
- DYK.. that there are two recycle bins for newspapers and cardboard now located on the left side of 903 a short distance before the firehouse?
- DYK… that thanks to the work of Mark Lester and donations from Wildwood Nursery our entrance had a well-deserved “facelift”? Thanks Mark!
Well, I think that’s all the Good News I have for now. As summertime approaches and more of our neighbors return we would like to remind everyone to be VERY CAREFUL on the roads AND in the water. We will have more traffic on both, and we need to be mindful of other vehicles and obey the “rules of the road”, especially at a “Y” intersection. As for boating, please be sure you are in compliance with all the boating laws and licensing restrictions that are now in place.
Stay safe and be happy……………..
