Good News Letter – Spring/Summer 2021

June 10, 2021 by Faye Harrisk

Hello everyone, we hope this finds you and your family all doing well and looking forward to getting a little bit more “back to normal”. It was great to see so many of our neighbors at the Annual Membership Meeting on April 24th. It was a very productive meeting and we had a chance to meet several of our new members. We hope to get to know everyone better as time goes on.

Our new slate of Officers and Directors for 2021-2022 are: Faye Harris; Joe Liberatore; Clayton Wooddy; Jerry Corbett; Rick Graves; Jim Miller; Katherine Joyce; Virginia Morgan and Rick Sina. Welcome to our newest Board members and a huge THANK YOU to our departing members: Jeff Stanton and Chuck Tripp for their years of service. We do hope that you will step up and say “YES” to giving some of your time to your Homeowners Association in the future.

It’s always a pleasure to introduce our new neighbors:

  • Robert & Elizabeth Childers – 136 Boyd Drive
  • Carrie Holshouser – 192 Brandon Court
  • Alex & Dominique Logston – 268 Brandon Court
  • Linwood Earl Davis – 42 Dogwood Drive
  • Carol Enos – 141 Dogwood Drive
  • Nicholas Bast – A-17 Holly Grove Lane
  • John & Michelle Bone -433 Winding Way
  • David & Lauren Williams – 435 Winding Way
  • David Spears & Billie Locke – 258 Lakeview Drive

We welcome you to Holly Grove Estates and hope that you will enjoy making this your home, or your weekend home. In any case, many of us began as weekenders and now enjoy this as our full-time residence. What a joy!!!! We also hope that you will join in and help out when given the opportunity in the future. Please become a part of YOUR neighborhood.

Our neighborhood is served by the LAKE GASTON VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT AND RESCUE SQUAD. They need all our support, $$ and physically so that they may serve. Please be generous to these services, they count US so that we can COUNT ON THEM!

There is also a LAKE GASTON COMMUNITY 911 TASK FORCE. The mission of this group is to educate the public and publicly elected officials in order to save lives and aid in improving the 911 operations in the 5 counties surrounding Lake Gaston. At the Membership meeting I handed out some packets with 911 emergency information. PLEASE NOTE THE NUMBER FOR THE MECKLENBURG 911 OFFICE HAS BEEN CHANGED AND THE CORRECT NUMBER IS: 434-738-0028!

You can find out more of this VERY IMPORTANT information and also things you can do to help protect you and your family by going to their web site, like them on Facebook: LKG911CommunityTaskForce or contact me, Peggy Donochod 636-2494, pdonochod@gmail.com.

Life has become more complicated these days and to help everyone keep up with the “latest” rules and regulations regarding boats/licensing/fires etc. here are a few of the web sites you might want to check out:

  • Lake Gaston Fire Dept. https://lakegastonfire.com
  • Dept. of Forestry – https://dof.virginia.gov
  • Boater’s guide – https://dwr.virginia.gov

We hope you will find this information helpful.

As a neighborhood, we too have some rules that help keep our neighborhood a safe and enjoyable place to live. I would like to remind everyone of a few:

  • Times have changed and we now have a greater number of folks renting at the lake, so they too need to be reminded of our rules and regulations. This is the responsibility of the home owners, please be sure that your guests are informed so they can have a wonderful stay.
  • Safety comes first and please be sure that your boaters know that there are “No Wake Zones” that must be adhered to, and that there is a 50’ distance that boats and jet skis need maintain AWAY from docks. Also children under 13 MUST have a lifejacket on when in a boat.
  • Our wonderful family pets need to be kept on a leash when off of your property and being walked for their protection as well as others.
  • Please drive slowly, our speed limit is 25. As our neighborhood continues to grow so does the number of vehicles travelling our roads, and so does the number of folks out for a walk or bike ride. One accident could ruin a number of lives! Let’s all “assume” that there are folks walking on the road around that next curve and drive accordingly. This could be YOUR family!!!
  • As we know NOISE TRAVELS OVER WATER ! Please be considerate of the neighbors, especially those living in a cove. I might suggest that you make your words “soft” in case you might have to eat them again. Also know Mecklenburg Co. has a 10 pm cutoff for all loud noises including fireworks.

That’s enough of the serious stuff let’s have some fun! This has been one heck of a year and we hope that everyone is looking forward to a safe and enjoyable summer. I’ve not heard anything about the 4th of July Boat Parade yet, but we will let you know. It would be really nice to be able to have an outdoor neighborhood “social” at some point. Many thanks to the walkers that pickup trash as they go. Please DON’T LITTER!!!! Watch for more “Good News” to come.
