Good News Letter – Winter/Spring 2016

February 29, 2016 by Joe Engleson

No wonder the time goes by so quickly! Now here we are (belatedly) thanking Chuck & Debbie Tripp for a fantastic Holiday Social neighborhood gathering, wishing you a Happy New Year and writing about Spring and Summer “happenings” here in Holly Grove Estates. By the way, would you like to host the 2016 Christmas Party? Just let us know by return email…Life is good!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR for our Annual General Membership Meeting and Social. The meeting will be held at the Rosemont Winery at 10 AM on Saturday, April 23rd. We will gather again in the “A Section” Cul-de-sac on Holly Grove Lane at 1 pm to enjoy delicious food & good friendship together. Some liquid refreshments will be supplied by the HOA and we ask that you bring your favorite COVERED DISH. We have never had a disappointing pot luck yet!!!!! Don’t forget to bring along your chairs and if you have some folding tables that would be helpful also, please let Carol Haefner know 434-636-2583. We have many NEW neighbors and this is the perfect opportunity to get to know each other. We hope to see y’all there!

It is that time of year again when we will be holding elections to the Board. Each year there are three vacancies: One Officer (Treasurer) and two Directors. The main job of the HG Board is to maintain the neighborhood which keeps your property values high. If you would be interested in participating on YOUR community Board of Directors or would like more information, please contact Peggy Donochod ASAP at 434- 636-2494.

The Good News is that we live in a very safe neighborhood, and we all need to continue to be alert and be our “Neighborhood Watch”. We were informed of an incident a short while ago when the Johnson’s on Lakeview Drive had a knock on their door in the middle of the night, but no one was there. If you ever notice anything suspicious do report it and also let the Board know. The “bad news” is that we had some spray paint vandalism at the entrance, for the second time. The Good News is that we are looking into ways of making our entrance less of a target in the future, and hopefully the culprits will “grow up” soon. The new “motto” for today’s world seems to be; “If you SEE something….SAY something”, and that’s not a bad way for all of us to be proactive!

While we are on the subject of being attentive to our surroundings, if you see folks at our boat ramp that you do not recognize it wouldn’t hurt to stop and do a “spot check”; introduce yourself and ask if they live or are renting/visiting here and who’s house. It’s a friendly way to remind folks that this is a PRIVATE BOAT RAMP and it is for launch purposes only, boats should NOT be docked there.

Speaking of SAFE, as the temperature increases so does the traffic on our roads. Please remind your guests and visitors (and maybe occasionally yourself) to drive slowly through the neighborhood. We have lots of folks that like to walk and enjoy this beautiful place, some have their children/grandchildren and dogs with them. Please be mindful of that, and especially take it slow on the curves! Remember the Yield signs are there for a reason…….two vehicles cannot occupy the same space at the same time!

ATTENTION EVERYONE………..IN VIRGINIA AS OF JULY 1st 2016 A BOATING LICENSE IS REQUIRED TO OPERATE A POWERED BOAT WITH 10 HP OR GREATER AND ALSO JET SKIS FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES!!!!!!!! For more information regarding boating safety and education or to see a class schedule, visit: www.dgif.virginia.gov
Oh my, speaking of LAWS….if you’re planning to burn always check the burning laws at the VA Forestry web site (www.dof.virginia.gov). If burning is permitted it is usually after 4 pm. If it’s windy, please use common sense, a fire can quickly get out of hand, and always keep a water hose handy.

SPRING CLEANING……When the leaves are down we really get to see into the woods, and our woods are getting pretty old with quite a bit of branches and trees down and looking rather messy. This may be a good time to get out and tidy up your property before it gets too hot. A reminder, if you’re blowing leaves, PLEASE do not blow them onto the road. Let’s ALL do a little sprucing up for Spring!

Before we know it the annual dues notice will be mailed out to you again. The Good News is that everyone pays their dues! However, we want to remind everyone that
we will be adhering to strict deadlines for payment and applying late fees and penalties . If you have a problem, you need to contact the Board ASAP.
PLEASE be sure to update your information with us. If you have moved, have a new cell # or e-mail, please let us know so that we may keep everything and everyone up to date, and we can contact you if need be. We did just have a major winter storm here recently and hopefully there was no damage to anyone’s property, but there was a lot of wind!!! Thank you for making it a little easier for us to do our job!

We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful place. Help us to keep it safe and clean. When you walk take a plastic bag with you. You’ll be amazed how fast it can fill up, plus it gives you a double workout with a “bend and stretch” !
