Good News letter – Winter/Spring 2022

February 25, 2022 by Faye Harrisk

Good morning everyone.  Ever have a night that you had trouble sleeping and you didn’t know why? First, I was waking up from the brightness of the moon shining through our bedroom slider, and the next time it was because of our motion light turning on by the garage as a herd of our local “gardeners” were busy trimming our liriope.  Isn’t nature wonderful!  This was Superbowl night waking up to Valentine’s Day, and how appropriate…….I woke up thinking about YOU yes YOU, my friends and neighbors, and I felt compelled to write this.

I feel a bit like a bear coming out of hibernation, ready to shake off the winter blaaaaahs and get into the excitement of spring.  I would imagine that when they do come out they sort of take “inventory” of everything around them, and that’s how I feel this morning.  I’m so blessed to live in this wonderful place.  For those who may not know me, my husband Dan and I live at 59 Lakeview Drive and have had a home, be it a weekend retreat or full-time residence, in Holly Grove Estates since 1987, wow, that’s 35 years. We’ve been full-time since 1999.   If that doesn’t sound long to you it sure does to me.  Our boys were 17, 15 and 5, they’re now 52, 50 and 40!!!  (notice I did not include me in this example!)  Time does fly.  Just to give you a little “history”, when we purchased our property on ‘Lakeview Drive” there were only 7 houses and one cemetery on the entire road and only 2 being lived in full time. (not counting the cemetery!).   The roads were all gravel and they did not have any names.  There was only one “fork” and that was where Winding Way heads up the hill  and Section A goes straight, the road ended then at the turn  where Dogwood begins.  There was no Boyd Drive, Brandon Cove  or Dogwood Way.  My point being that we were a much smaller neighborhood and it was easier to know your neighbors.  We need to make more of an effort to know each other.

Our neighborhood has come a long way over the years and it’s all been good.   Sadly, most of the original people that were here are no longer, but we have some wonderful new neighbors who have come to be a part of our life, and that includes YOU.  We want to keep our home community a safe and happy place to live and a good investment for our future.  That’s why it really troubles me when our lovely entrance that we’ve worked so hard to create several years ago, becomes a target of vandalism.  Recently,  (and I’m “assuming” that they were teenagers because I can’t possibly imagine an adult doing this) some teenager(s) took shots at the glass in our lovely, and expensive, lights and thanks, to Al Veeck we were able to replace the glass with plexiglass to solve the problem.  Nope that did not take care of it!  They returned with some sort of bat and tried to smash them.  Fortunately, once again, Al and others to the rescue, and they are “straightened out……somewhat”.  Please be vigilant and if you see anything going on don’t be afraid to say so.

Well, it is THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN, when we will be holding our ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING and we hope everyone will attend.  The meeting will be held Saturday, APRIL 23RD at 10 am in the fellowship hall  (bell-tower entrance) of the Prospect United Methodist Church, 1974 Ebony Road, Ebony 23845. (take 903 East about 5 miles, to Ebony Road and take a right and the church is on the left).

As always this is the meeting when we have our ELECTION OF OFFICERS.  These are just neighbors, like you and me, who care enough about our neighborhood to be willing to say “YES” when asked to serve a couple of years on the Board.  Part of what makes Holly Grove Estates so great is the combination of people with history of our past and new folks with ideas for our future.  This could be YOU!  Please consider joining the Board.  It truly is IMPORTANT to the future of our neighborhood and its value to all.  Imagine if: NO ONE was willing to contact and collect our dues; oversee maintenance of our roads; handle our A/B water; organize socials; be the architectural guide for new home/additions; help handle legal issues; help prepare our new covenants; repair our ramp; trim the trees; maintain the entrance; pay our bills; keep you informed of what’s happening; or take the lead of this wonderful team??????

If you would like more information please contact  Faye Harris fharrisk@verizon.net  at (804) 212-9479 or me,  Peggy Donochod 636-2494,  pdonochod@gmail.com

That’s a lot of thinking for only 7 am in the morning, without coffee!!!!! We truly hope that you will consider putting your talents to work along side us so that Holly Grove will remain the wonderful community that it is now.

 Thanking of you in advance,
Peggy Donochod and  Your HOA Board of Directors
